Frequently Asked Questions

Which are the best days of the week for cupping (hijama)? Can cupping (hijama) be performed on 17th, 19th and 21st if they coincide with a Wednesday?

The best days for cupping (hijama) are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and there is a prohibition for cupping (hijama) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, cupping (hijama) can be performed, out of necessity or due to sickness, on these days. As for Wednesday, then cupping (hijama) is not allowed to be performed at all.

If the 17th, 19th and 21st coincide with a prohibited day such as a Wednesday then one must not perform cupping (hijama) on this day due to the prohibition. If the 17th, 19th and 21st day coincide with Friday, Saturday or Sunday then you can perform cupping (hijama) due to a (dire) need. The Messenger r said, “Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease.” [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

What is the ruling for performing cupping (hijama) on Wednesday and Wednesday night (which precedes it)?

Cupping (hijama) is prohibited on Wednesday due to a strong prohibition of cupping (hijama) on that day and this includes its’ night.

If you have the ability it is highly recommended to fast at least 2-3 hours before the session. You can still drink

What should I do after a session?
  • It is recommenced for the patient to follow the below points:

    • Avoid having a shower/bath for 24 hours
    • Avoid dairy and red meat products for 2 days. These foods require more energy and blood flow during digestion, therefore
reducing the blood flow to the cupped areas and slowing the healing process.
    • Avoid strenuous activities for 24 hours
Does it hurt?

Hijama does not hurt. But sometimes there is discomfort and in the first day or so afterwards the cupped area may feel a little itchy. We recommend to apply black seed oil on cupped areas to help itchiness, aid healing, reduce scarring and reduce the risk of infection.

Does cupping cause bruising?

A cupping therapy session may leave painless marks from pulling up the stagnant blood, we call it “discolouration”,
commonly mistaken for bruises. Cupping should NOT cause bruises, bruises are caused by trauma, blood leaks into thesurrounding tissue and as a result can be painful.

How long do the cupping marks last?

Your cupping marks may be instant or develop over the first 24rhs. After 3 days they start to disappear and should be gone after a weeks.
